What Is MIG Welding?
MIG welding, short for metal inert gas welding and officially known as gas metal arc welding (GMAW), is a process in which an electric arc forms between a continuously fed wire electrode and the base metal. A shielding gas, typically argon, CO2, or a blend, flows through the welding nozzle to protect the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination. GMAW welding is one of the most widely used processes in industrial fabrication because of its speed, versatility, and ability to produce strong, consistent welds across a wide range of metals and thicknesses.

MIG Welding Process, Equipment and Technique
Good MIG welding is more than pulling a trigger. Every job in our shop starts with matching the setup to the material.
Settings dialed to the material. Our welders adjust MIG welding settings, including voltage, wire feed speed, and travel speed, to the specific alloy and thickness on the table. The settings that produce a sound weld on 1/4 inch steel will burn through a 22 gauge sheet, and experience is what closes that gap.
Wire and gas selected per job. MIG welding wire and shielding gas are chosen as a pair. Solid steel wire with a CO2-argon blend for structural steel, stainless wire with tri-mix gas for 304 and 316, and aluminum wire with pure argon for 6061 and 5052. The wrong MIG welding gas produces porosity that no amount of skill can hide.
Equipment maintained for consistency. Industrial MIG welding equipment only stays consistent when it is looked after. Clean liners, fresh contact tips, and clear nozzles keep the arc stable across an entire production run, so part one hundred welds like part one.
Technique matched to the joint. Push versus pull, stringer versus weave, and torch angle all change penetration and bead profile. Our welders apply the MIG welding technique each joint calls for rather than one habit applied to everything.

Stainless Steel
MIG welding stainless steel requires the right wire and gas blend, and we run both for 304 and 316 grades used in food service, HVAC, and industrial applications. Clean, strong welds on sheet and plate.
Aluminum
MIG welding aluminum demands proper feeding equipment and pure argon shielding. We weld 6061 and 5052 alloys for lightweight assemblies, truck bodies, enclosures, and structural components.

What metals can you MIG weld?

How is MIG welding different from TIG welding?

Can you MIG weld aluminum?

Can you MIG weld cast iron?
Cast iron is generally a poor match for the MIG process because of its carbon content and cracking risk, and it is not a material we stock or fabricate. Our MIG welding covers steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. If your project involves cast iron, we are happy to point you in the right direction.
Do I need to know welding settings or gas types to order?
No. Send your drawing, material, and thickness, and our welders handle wire selection, shielding gas, and machine settings. That is our job, not yours.
Do you offer both prototype and production MIG welding?
Yes. We handle one-off prototype welding as well as medium and high-volume production runs, with no minimum order.
