What Is TIG Welding?
TIG welding, officially known as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and sometimes called heliarc welding, uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to create the arc, with a separate filler rod fed by hand into the weld pool. An inert shielding gas, typically pure argon, protects the weld from contamination. The welder controls heat input precisely, often with a foot pedal, which makes the TIG welding process the most precise and highest-quality arc welding method available. The result is a clean, spatter-free weld with excellent bead appearance, ideal for visible seams, thin materials, and high-purity applications.

Process, Equipment and Technique for TIG Welding
The quality ceiling of TIG is high, but reaching it depends on setup and hands. Here is what goes into every TIG job in our shop.
The electrode and the arc. The TIG Welding electrode is tungsten, ground to the correct tip geometry for the material and current type. Electrode preparation is one of the small details that separates a stable, focused arc from a wandering one.
Filler selected per joint. The TIG welding rod is chosen to match the base metal: ER308L or ER316L for stainless grades, ER4043 or ER5356 for aluminum alloys, ER70S-2 for steel. Where wire feed is used for automation, TIG welding wire follows the same matching logic.
Gas kept pure. TIG welding gas is almost always pure argon, and purity is non-negotiable. Contaminated shielding shows up instantly as a grey, sooty bead on stainless or porosity in aluminum.
Settings tuned to the metal. TIG welding settings differ fundamentally by material: AC with balance control for aluminum to break up surface oxide, DC electrode negative for steel and stainless, amperage matched to thickness. Our welders set up each job for the metal on the table.
Equipment maintained. Industrial TIG welding equipment, from torches and collets to gas lenses, is kept clean and in spec so the hundredth weld looks like the first.

Aluminum
TIG welding aluminum delivers pore-free joints on 6061 and 5052 alloys, thin or thick. AC balance control breaks down the oxide layer that defeats lesser setups. Ideal for automotive work, truck bodies, and enclosures.

What is TIG welding used for?
TIG welding is used for precision and cosmetic applications: stainless steel fabrication, aluminum welding, thin-gauge sheet metal, pipe and tube joints, and any work where weld quality and appearance are critical.
What is GTAW welding?
GTAW stands for gas tungsten arc welding, the official technical name for TIG welding. The two terms are interchangeable.
Can you TIG weld aluminum?
Yes. TIG is one of the best processes for aluminum, delivering clean, pore-free welds on thin and thick joints in 6061 and 5052 alloys.
What is heliarc welding?
Heliarc is an older name for TIG welding, from the original use of helium as the shielding gas. Argon is standard today, but the term survives in some industries. If your spec says heliarc, we do it.
Can you TIG weld cast iron?
Cast iron is a poor match for TIG because of its carbon content and cracking behaviour, and it is not a material we stock. Our TIG work covers stainless steel, aluminum, and steel. If your project involves cast iron, we can point you toward the right specialist.
Can you TIG weld copper?
TIG can weld copper, but copper is not part of our standard material range of steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. If you have a copper or specialty-alloy project, contact us and we will tell you honestly whether it fits our shop.
How is TIG welding different from MIG welding?
TIG is slower but produces cleaner, more precise welds. MIG is faster and more economical at production volume. TIG is the preferred choice for stainless steel, aluminum, thin materials, and cosmetic joints.
Do I need to specify rod, gas, or settings when ordering?
No. Send your drawing, material, and thickness, and our welders select the filler rod, shielding gas, and machine settings. That expertise is what you are hiring.
