Choosing the right metal isn’t just a spec sheet decision, it shapes cost, weight, corrosion resistance, and how the part performs for
years in the field. Below is how we walk clients through the three materials we cut most: mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
Start With the Job, Not the Metal
Before comparing alloys, define what the part actually needs to survive. A truck bracket exposed to road salt has different requirements
than an indoor enclosure or a food-grade fixture. Once the environment and load are clear, the material choice becomes much easier.
- Will the part be exposed to moisture, chemicals, or road salt?
- Does weight matter for the application (automotive, aerospace, mobile equipment)?
- Is the part cosmetic or purely structural?
- What is the realistic budget per part at your production volume?
Mild Steel
Mild steel remains the workhorse of the shop floor. It’s strong, easy to weld, and the least expensive option per pound, which makes it
the default choice for structural brackets, frames, and enclosures that will be painted or powder coated.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel adds corrosion resistance and a cleaner finish, at a higher material cost. Grade 304 covers most general-purpose and
food-grade needs, while 316 adds molybdenum for better resistance in marine or chemical-heavy environments.
Aluminum
Aluminum is roughly a third the weight of steel and resists corrosion naturally, without coating. It costs more than mild steel and is more
particular to weld, but for trucking, automotive, and any application where weight savings translate directly into performance or fuel
efficiency, it’s usually worth it.
